Children of color\ndisproportionately suffer these impacts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United\nHospital Fund\u2019s recent report, <a href=\"https:\/\/uhfnyc.org\/publications\/publication\/covid-19-ripple-effect-impact-covid-19-children-new-york-state\/\">\u201cThe COVID-19 Ripple Effect: The\nImpact of COVID-19 on Children in New York State\u201d<\/a>, offers a devastating snapshot of the\nsituation in the Empire State. The researchers found that in five months of\nthis year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>One\nout of every 600 Black children and\none out of every 700 Hispanic children in New York lost a parent;<\/li><li>An additional 325,000\nchildren in New York are newly in or near poverty (on top of the 350,000 New\nYork children who were already in or near poverty)<\/li><li>Up to 23% of New York\nchildren who lost a parent or caregiver due to COVID-19 may be at risk of\nentering foster or kinship care. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term impacts of these traumas include\nincreased poverty and housing instability, prolonged financial hardship, and\nincreased mental health illnesses, among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Hospital Fund\u2019s Suzanne Brundage, an author of the report, joined First Focus on Children to discuss the implications of the research and how we can use it to protect children in the future.
